hundred(s) / thousand(s)等數詞的單數與複數的用法
為什麼”two thousand dollars”的”thousand”不用複數，而”thousands of students”的”thousands”要用複數呢？這是英語中數詞使用的特定規則。當我們提到一個確切的數字時（例如100、2,000、3,000,000、1,000,000,000等），數詞 hundred(百)、thousand(千)、million(百萬)、billion(十億)等都是單數形式。但當我們泛指一個大概的數量而不是具體的數字時，我們會使用其複數形式。
hundred跟thousand等數詞不加s的原因
當我們要描述的是一個具體數字時，hundred / thousand / million / billion這些數詞是不加s的，因為他們只是一個抽象的數字概念，例如：three hundred fifty-five (355) / ten thousand four hundred sixty-nine (10,469) / thirteen million two hundred five (13,000,205)等 。
只是當這個數字不像上面所舉的這麼複雜，只有three hundred (300) / four thousand (4,000) / seven million (7,000,000)，這時候就容易讓人混淆，上面的例子中明明都是兩個以上，hundred / thousand / million為什麼不加上s？原因是一樣的，他們都只是一個數字，是抽象的概念，不需要加上s。但是他們後面出現名詞時，這些名詞一定是可數名詞，且要用複數型，因為，這些數字表示這個名詞是兩個以上，例如：two hundred people / three thousand trees，兩個以上的人跟樹。
- I have about three hundred books.
我有大約300本書。 - The smart phone cost me thirty thousand dollars.
智慧型手機花了我三萬元。 - I bought two dozen eggs.
我買了兩打蛋(a dozen=12個，也是數字單位)。 - The house is worth at least two hundred million dollars.
這所房子的價值至少2億元(200百萬)。 - They have two hundred apples in stock.
他們有兩百個蘋果庫存。 - The ancient city is three thousand years old.
這座古城已有三千年的歷史。 - The company made a profit of three million dollars last year.
該公司去年賺了三百萬元。 - The project will cost two billion dollars.
該專案將花費二十億元。
在上面的例子中，數詞「dozen」、「hundred」、「thousand」、「million」跟「billion」代表的是確切的、具體的數量，所以我們不使用複數形式。
hundred跟thousand等數詞加s的原因
當數量太大，或我們無法知道明確的數量，只能抓個大概、或是想要強調(誇示法)時，例如：有好幾百人、數千年等。這時，hundred / thousand / million等字，就不是指具體的數字，而是我們要來估算的量詞了。
有好幾百人的概念要轉成好幾個百的人，因為不確定有幾百，可能是200人，300人，450人等，但肯定超過一百，所以在hundred後面加上s，讓讀者或聽眾很清楚的明白，也因為要讓語意清晰，不能在hundreds後面直接接複數名詞，而是先加上of，再接複數名詞，以凸顯hundreds是複數型，英文寫成hundreds of people。
同樣地，數千年也要轉成好幾個千的概念，其表示方式也要在thousand後面加上s，先加上of，再接複數名詞，以凸顯thousands是複數型，英文寫成thousands of years。以此類推，在使用million、billion，還有dozen(打 – 現在比較少見) 這些數詞時，當我們表達的是大概的數量，而不是一個精確的數字時，我們使用複數形式。
- There were hundreds of people at the party, but I couldn’t give an exact number.
派對上有數百人，但我不能給出確切的數字。 - There are hundreds of people waiting outside.
外面已有數百人等候。 - The museum attracts thousands every year.
這個博物館每年吸引數千人參觀。 - There were thousands of stars in the sky.
天上有成千上萬顆星星。 - He has read hundreds of books on the subject.
他已經閱讀了數百本有關這個主題的書了。 - The protest drew thousands of people, making it one of the largest in recent years.

在上面的例子中，要嘛數量都很大、要嘛無法知道具體數字或強調很多時，說話者就會使用「dozen」、「hundred」、「thousand」、「million」跟「billion」來作為估算的量詞，所以使用複數形式，且在其後要加上of – hundreds of / thousands of / millions of / billions of。
無論是「hundred」、「thousand」、「million」還是「billion」，當我們表達的是一個精確的數量時，數詞後面通常不加「s」，但當要描述一個不確定的大數量時，則使用「百」、「千」、「百萬」、「十億」等這些數詞加「s」的形式來表示這是一個概數或表達作者強調數量很大的意思。
常見的複數數詞的片語
在英文中有一些含有複數數詞的片語，用以描述無法計數的大數量。這些片語在描述大量的事物或人時都很常用，介紹如下：
- in the hundreds/thousands – 表示一個大致的數量範圍
- Tens of thousands – 數萬
- Hundreds of thousands – 數十萬
- Dozens of – 許多、數十個
- The number of applicants was in the hundreds.
