As的用法詳解 – 連接詞、介系詞與副詞

一個英文單字的詞性決定了這個單字要如何用,它在句子的位置會不一樣。有些單字同時具有兩種以上的詞性,有些單字甚至因為詞性不同,而有不同的意思,如果沒有注意到詞性跟語意的差別,在閱讀時,常會造成困惑,在寫作上,也會不知如何使用。as就是這樣的一個字。它不只自己本身詞性跟語意眾多,它也跟許多常見的動詞、形容詞、副詞等構成搭配詞與片語,可以說,它是英文最廣泛被使用的字之一。本文將詳細解說as的各種用法與句型。

As要如何用?詞性決定用法

as這個字有連接詞、副詞跟介系詞三種詞性,還可以當準關係代名詞。當它是連接詞時,它的語意可以是因為、當…時候、雖然、隨著、如同這五種意思,當他是介系詞時,語意是作為、以…的身份,當它是副詞時,語意則為一樣地…,修飾形容詞或副詞,常出現在原級比較的句型中。as 這個單字,因為不同詞性,用法差異非常大。

as的語意是因為時,用法跟because一樣,在很多情況下,兩個字可以互換。除此之外,as比because正式一點。

as的語意是當…時,用法跟語意和when跟while相近,用於表示某事與另一件事同時發生。在這個語意下,有一個常見片語是just as,語意強調兩個動作或事件恰好同時發生(兩件事非常密切地同時發生)。下面舉例說明as跟just as的分別:
As she left, my phone rang.

as的語意是隨著時,用於表示隨著一件事的發展,另一件事同時也在發展。

  1. As the game was going on, the crowd was cheering loudly.
    隨著比賽的進行,全場響起了熱烈的歡呼聲
  2. As the sun set, the sky turned a beautiful shade of orange.
    隨著夕陽西下,天空染成一片美麗的橘(變成橘色)
  3. As the meeting progressed, the discussion became more heated.
    隨著會議的進行,討論變得更加激烈
  4. As technology advances, the way we live and work is constantly changing.
    隨著科技的進步,我們的生活和工作方式也在不斷變化
  5. As the nation grew, so did what came to be called the American Dream.
    隨著國家的發展,後來被稱為美國夢的東西也在發展
    *請注意這個句型結構,so帶領的句子倒裝

as的語意是雖然時,用法比較特殊,跟though的用法不一樣。下面我們用though的句子,來介紹as當though的時候,句型的變化:
Though it was raining, I went for a walk.
-將be動詞後面的Ving移到句首,though去掉,在主詞it前面加上as ((如果是形容詞或Vpp也一樣要移到句首)
-Raining as it was, I went for a walk. 雖然下著雨,我還是去散步
Though she worked hard, she did not get the promotion.
-將動詞後面的副詞移到句首,though去掉,在主詞she前面加上as
-Hard as she worked, she did not get the promotion. 儘管她工作很努力,但她沒有得到晉升
Though he is a child, he has a mature understanding of the world.
-將be動詞後面的名詞移到句首,要記得將不定冠詞要去掉,再將though去掉,在主詞he前面加上as
-Child as he is, he has a mature understanding of the world.雖然他是個孩子,但他對這個世界有著成熟的認識

  1. Tired as I am, I will stay up to finish this project.
    雖然我很累,但我會熬夜完成這個項目。
  2. Angry as he was, he spoke to his son calmly.
    儘管他很生氣,但他仍然平靜地對他的兒子說話
  3. Fast as he ran, he still couldn’t catch up with his competitors.
    他跑得再快,也追不上對手(雖然他跑得很快,依然追不上對手)
  4. Girls as they are, they still enjoy playing with trucks and cars.
    儘管她們是女孩,但她們仍然喜歡玩卡車和汽車

as的語意還有如同…那樣、以…的方式的語意

  1. As you said, he did not believe me.
    如你所說的,他並不相信我
  2. She did as she was told.
    她依照吩咐做了
  3. As I was just saying, I think we should consider a different approach.
    正如我剛才所說,我認為我們應該考慮一種不同的方法

As 做為副詞

as還可以做為副詞,用來修飾形容詞或副詞,除此之外,常跟as當連接詞的用法合併,構成形容詞或副詞的原級比較的句子。

    他像往常一樣遲到了
  2. As with all book covers, good design is vital.
    與所有書籍封面一樣,良好的設計非常重要
  3. Father will need to rest as well.
    父親也需要休息(as well的語意是『也』)
  4. As soon as I finished my exam, I went to see my friends.

  5. The boy was very tall–as tall as an adult.
    這個男孩很高——和成年人一樣高
  6. She had to get a car as soon as possible.
    她必須盡快弄到一輛車
  7. She swims as fast as a fish.

  8. He doesn’t play games as much as he used to.

As作為準關係代名詞

    通常情況下,要預測某人的情緒與反應很難
  5. As is often the case in large organizations, communication can be a challenge.
    通常情況下,在大型組織中,溝通是一個挑戰

As 做為介系詞

as還有介系詞的用法,它的語意是身為,作為…的身份。很多人將它跟like混淆,like當介系詞的的語意是像。She is like a teacher.她像個老師,但,事實上,她不是。She works as a teacher.她是老師。
