nonetheless是副詞，語意是然而、儘管。出現在句首時，其後要打逗號，是轉換詞的一種，表示其後語意跟前面的敘述是不同的，前面敘述正面，後面就是反面的，反之亦然，而作者想要強調的重點在nonetheless所在的句子或其後的一整個敘述，前面只是鋪陳而已。它也可以出現在句中跟句尾，但是不需要用逗號將nonetheless跟句子隔開。
這個字的用法跟語意和however, nevertheless一樣，但是nonetheless跟nevertheless比較正式，多出現在學術論文中。
注意：nonetheless、nevertheless跟however(語意是然而時)，不是連接詞，不可以用來連接兩個句子，但可以用分號或連接詞連接兩個句子，其句型為：
SV. Nonetheless, SV.
SV; nonetheless, SV.
SV; but nonetheless SV.
