  1. He used a knife to cut the cake.
  2. I wanted to visit him before dinner.
  3. I opened the door only to see a dog.
  4. They planned to make a cake for their mother.
  5. We intended to go there.
  6. Her teacher persuaded her to study harder.
  7. He refused to talk to me.

  1. I can’t afford to live here.
  2. He agreed to help.
  3. I failed to do it.
  4. They happened to see the accident.
  5. I intend to go to America this winter.
  6. Children tend to forget things.
  7. He often threatens to quit.
  8. The boy volunteered to help me.
  9. I wished to go, but I couldn’t.
  10. He managed to find a seat for me.
  11. She hesitated to do it.
  12. The boy omits to brush his teeth.
  13. Don’t neglect to water the plants.

  • dare
  • need需要 / want想要 / would like想要
  • expect期待
  1. They asked to come
    They asked John to come.
  2. He begged to go.
    He begged her to go.
  3. I dared to go.
    I dared Mary to go.
  4. They expect to finish soon.
They expect him to finish soon.
  5. We need to go.
    We need you to go.

  1. Our teacher convinced us to try again.
  2. They forced us to go there.
  3. I told my son to go home earlier.
  4. We hired him to do the job.
  5. She invited me to come.
  6. The man ordered me to stop.
  7. We will persuade him to leave.
  8. She reminded me to send the mail.
  9. The school required us to get to school before 7:00.
  10. They urged me to change my mind.
  11. She warned me not to do it.

  1. The doctor advised him to rest.
  2. He won’t allow me to swim.
  3. The accident caused John to faint.
  4. My mother encouraged me to study languages.
  5. Will they permit us to camp here?
  6. He taught her to play tennis.

  • S be / seem / appear / prove後面要用to V
  • S be too 形容詞 to V
  • S be 形容詞 enough to V
  1. I am happy to see you.
  2. He was seen to kill the man.
  3. It cost me three thousand dollars to get my computer fixed.
  4. He appeared to be sick.
  5. Helen is too short to get the box on top of the shelf.
  6. I am tall enough to reach the shelf.
To V or Ving

  1. He spent three days (in) working on the project.
  2. She was busy (in) cleaning the house.
  3. He quit smoking because of his son.
  4. They enjoyed playing basketball.
  5. He is now engaged (in) teaching young children English.
  6. I am used to getting up early.

Ving:

  • be busy (in)忙於
  • get through完成
  • repent of後悔
  • be/ get used to習慣於 / be (get) accustomed to習慣於
  •  be devoted to致力於
  • look forward to期待
  • object to反對 / have an objection to反對 / be opposed to反對
  • prefer Ving to Ving

  1. I am looking forward to seeing you.
  2. He objected to doing so.
  3. She insisted on going fishing.
  4. We prefer dancing to singing.

Ving:

  • can’t help不能不
  • burst out 突然
  • break off 突然停止 / leave off 中止
  • go on繼續 / keep 保持
  1. She admitted/ denied cheating.
  2. The baby burst out crying.
  3. I only missed being hit.
  4. I really appreciated getting your invitation.

  • be worth值得
  1. I avoided seeing her at school.
  2. She suggested taking a break.
  3. I escaped being killed.
  4. I put off cleaning the house.
  5. Do you mind opening the window?
  6. The book is worth reading.

  • remember to V

    try Ving
  • dread to V(常接著think和consider,用於口語)
    dread Ving

Remember to buy a bag of sugar.

  • can’t bear / can’t stand / can’t endure
  1. I can’t bear to see him cry.
I can’t bear seeing him cry.
  2. I prefer swimming in winter.
I prefer to swim in winter.

  1. I want to wash the car.
    The car wants washing.
  2. I need to finish my homework.
    The house needs cleaning,

如果對於要用to V還是to Ving這個文法點有興趣,可以閱讀『To Ving?
